Participant pool
How the lab handles your data
This page covers the participant register only. Each study takes its own consent separately and has its own information sheet, which you read before that session begins.
What is collected and why
| What | Why the lab holds it |
|---|---|
| Name | To confirm at check-in that the person in the chair is the person who booked the seat, and to sign for a payment. |
| Email address and mobile number | To confirm a booking, to send a reminder before a session, and to let you sign back in to this site. |
| Year of birth | Studies recruit within age bands. Year is held rather than a full date of birth because year is all the bands need. |
| Gender, institution, course, level, year of study, languages | To select participants for a study and to check that a sample is balanced. Gender is optional. |
| How you heard about the lab | To judge which recruitment routes work. Optional. |
| Your bookings, attendance and absences | To run sessions, to pay you, and to apply the pool rules on the front page. |
The lab does not collect your address, your identity numbers, your bank details or any health information on this register. Where a study needs something further, it asks for it in that study's own consent process and says why.
Who can see it
- The Lab Manager and the research assistants running a session see the register and the roster for their session.
- A researcher analysing a study receives data with your identifying details removed and your participant reference in their place.
- Nobody outside the lab is given the register.
To confirm: the individual designated as Data Fiduciary under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 for the Department of Economics.
Where it is stored and for how long
- The register is held in a managed database hosted in Singapore, with access limited to the lab's own staff account.
- Your pool record is kept while you are a member of the pool, and for the retention period set in the lab's data management plan after your last session.
- Once you ask for erasure, your name, contact details and demographic answers are cleared. The record that a participant reference attended a session remains, because the lab has to account for the sessions it ran and the payments it made. That remaining record cannot be traced back to you.
To confirm: the retention period, which is set by the data management plan and the ethics approval for the pool.
What you can ask for
- Leave the pool. Sign in on the front page and use "Withdraw from the pool". Any seat you hold is released at once.
- Have your details erased. Ask the Lab Manager. You do not have to give a reason.
- See or correct what is held about you. Ask the Lab Manager.
- Withdraw from a study you are in the middle of. Tell the research assistant. You stop immediately, you still receive the show-up payment, and nobody will ask you why.
To confirm: the lab email address for these requests, which is being created by the department.
What joining the pool is not
Registering here is consent to be held on the register and contacted about studies. It is not consent to take part in any study. Consent for a study is taken in writing, before that session starts, after you have read that study's information sheet and had the chance to ask questions. No study enrols anyone before it holds a current approval reference from the Research Centre Ethics Committee, and that reference is shown next to every study on the sign-up page.
